An ambulance VSL (Vehicle for Medical Assistance or Ambulance d’assistance medicale in French) is equipped with all of the tools necessary for transporting patients in critical condition, commonly referred to as paramedic ambulance. Used during emergencies like heart attacks, strokes and tragic accidents this vehicle provides assistance immediately and can even save lives!
This type of ambulance comes equipped with all necessary medical equipment to support its patient, such as portable oxygen and emergency treatment devices. However, it’s only intended for single person transportation; groups may not be suitable.
VSLs must be registered and subject to an annual technical controle, and only allow transport of patients in serious illness or trauma conditions. Furthermore, they must meet all standards of hygiene.
VSL usage by businesses is strictly forbidden in cities where traffic must circulate on roads.
Equipment transport (conductor and companion) must be completed by at least two individuals with each having received special medical training.
Convocation for Equipage Transport must be submitted to CPAM, who accept it if it satisfies all the conditions listed in Article 44 of CGI. Details such as route, date/time of operation/modalities must also be specified as well as mode of transport used (taxi conventionne, ambulance or VSL) as well as whether or not person being transported is resident in city where transport will occur.
